St Peter's
is a Church of England First School for boys and girls aged from 4 to
9 years, and was opened on its present site in February 1996.
Our well maintained
school consists of 4 classrooms, a spacious hall and library, with large
playing areas and adventure play equipment outside.
Children are arranged
in 4 classes of up to 30. The total school roll is currently 118. Little
Horseshoes Nursery School shares our school site, and has provision
for children from 2½ to 4 years.
We are proud of
our Christian foundation, and as such we aim to create a happy, secure
and stimulating environment for your child.
We hope to provide
opportunities and experiences in all areas of the curriculum where we
can enable your child to grow and develop intellectually, physically,
socially and spiritually. Each child is uniquely valued and his/her
gifts and potential are nurtured and developed. Respect, care and courtesy
for others, alongside self-discipline, are actively encouraged.
Mission Statement
We aim to create a caring community based on strong Christian principles
in the steps of the life and teaching of Jesus Christ, in which your
child can feel happy and secure and where your child's intellectual,
emotional and physical potential can develop to the full.
The ethos of our
school is:
| |
If
children live with tolerance
they learn to be patient. |
| |
If
children live with encouragement
they learn confidence. |
| |
If
children live with praise
they learn to appreciate. |

If
children live with fairness
they learn justice. |

If
children live with security

YOUR CHILD'S
INDIVIDUAL NEEDS
Gifted, Tealented and More Able
At St Peter's Church of England First School we recognise how important
it is to meet the needs of Gifted and Talented children. In order to
do this the school keeps a register of children it has identified as
'Gifted, Talented and More Able'.
In Years 1 and 2,
children identified as 'Gifted, Talented or More Able' are known as
'Little Sparks' and they meet once a week to take part in activities
designed to challenge them and extend their thinking skills.
In Years 3 and 4
children identified as 'Gifted, Talented or More Able' are known as
'Sparklers' and they meet once a week to cover a specific termly topic,
which will include aspects of maths, literacy, science, ICT, PSHE, history
and geography. This work aims to encourage the children to undertake
their own research and off-site visits form an integral part of the
topic.
Children with Special
Educational Needs
St Peter's First School follows the Code of Practice for Special Educational
Needs, which directly links to the Somerset Inclusion Charter and the
five outcomes from 'Every Child Matters':
- Being Healthy
- Staying Safe
- Enjoying and
Achieving
- Making a Positive
Contribution
- Economic Well-Being
We believe in all
of our children fulfilling their potential and enjoying success by providing
personalised learning and flexible curriculum approaches.
Early identification of any difficulties your child may be experiencing
will be carefully monitored by the class Teacher and the Special Needs
Coordinator.
The school is working
towards a framework for assessment of the Inclusive Dyslexia Friendly
School Status by meeting the standards approved by the DfES and the
British Dyslexia Association. Through our school policies, practice
and ethos, we aim to promote high standards and effective teaching and
learning for pupils displaying specific learning differences.
Occasionally, it
may be necessary to bring together support from a range of services
and consult specialist advice to effectively address the needs of the
children. Parents and carers will be kept fully informed and involved
in decision making about their child through Individual Education Plans
and Annual Reviews.
It is our desire
at St Peter's School to enable all of our children to be fully included
in the life of the school.
Admission and Transfer
Children are admitted into the school in the September preceding their
fifth birthday, although not all the children will be full time immediately.
Children will
be part-time for the first few weeks of the Autumn Term. Parents
wishing to send their children to our school should register at: Admissions,
County Hall, Taunton, Somerset TA1 4DY as early as possible. The Headteacher
is always pleased to show prospective parents around so please telephone
to make an appointment if you wish to visit.
